Fourth of July

Happy 4th of July!

We started off our day by attending a breakfast at the park put on by our ward.  They had face painting for the kids.  Alexis loved her butterfly:

Alexis woke up pretty tired so I stayed home with her while she took a nap.  The rest of the family headed up to the cabin for a BBQ and to help clean-up the yard.  Afterwards, some of Alexis' cousins came over for swimming and pizza.  Alexis had so much fun jumping off the diving board over and over and over again (sorry, no pictures).  And of course, there were fireworks.  This was Alexis' first 4th of July in the United States, so she wasn't sure about the fireworks at first. But in the end, she loved them.

Waiting for the fireworks to start:

Of course, about 15 minutes into the show, Alexis announced that she had to go to the bathroom.  So, we missed the finale.  Oh well.  It was still fun.

Donut Falls

We went for a hike this past weekend to Donut Falls in Big Cottonwood Canyon. It was crazy busy! John made the comment that he likes to go hiking to get away from people and we felt like we could have been at Disneyland. There was a never-ending, constant stream of people on the trail. (It was really hard to get a picture without anyone else in it.)  Nevertheless, we had fun. Alexis loved it. She spent some time in the backpack and some time walking by herself. And she loved throwing rocks in the river when we stopped at the bottom of the falls.  We didn't climb all the way to the top of the falls (to see the "donut"), because I'm a bit afraid of heights and water and with the two combined, I just couldn't get myself to do.  But really, we were there for Alexis, and she didn't know the difference.

After the hike, we drove just a few minutes farther up the canyon to the cabin.  It was nice to have someplace to take a shower and a comfy nap.  John and Alexis went up to explore Silver Lake (which John told me was also packed), while I made dinner.  We would have loved to have spent the night at the cabin, but it wouldn't have left us enough time to get to church the next morning, so we headed home after dinner.  As much fun as we had, I don't think we will be planning any future Saturday hiking activities; we will take advantage of John's flexible schedule and try to go during the week.

Stripes

John got Alexis ready today and he let her pick out her own clothes. This is what she chose:

Future Pianist?

I've been wanting to learn how to play the piano for a long time now. (I even took lessons for a few months during the summer after I graduated high school.) So for my birthday, I got a keyboard along with a course that will hopefully help me to learn the basics on my own. The keyboard came in the mail today and Alexis fell in love:

Maybe we have a future pianist on our hands?

She also had fun playing in the big box:

New songs

Yesterday, Alexis came home from church singing "Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam."  She kept singing it and telling me that she learned it at church.  John and I were just dying because instead of saying "sunbeam," she says "sun-beep."  It is hilarious, and so cute at the same time:

Also, the other morning Alexis woke up singing this song:

It was so funny for John and I to lay in bed and listen to her sing this song over an over again to herself.  It is thanks to Mrs. Walker's preschool that she knows this song.
